Questions patients ask before starting
Will whitening hurt?
Some people get short lived sensitivity, usually a twinge with something cold. We can lower the gel strength or add a desensitising agent, and it settles once you stop.
How white will my teeth actually get?
It depends where they start and what caused the staining. You will get a realistic expectation at the exam rather than a number from an advert.
How long does it last?
Anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Keeping your trays makes topping up quick and cheap.
Will it whiten my crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening only works on natural enamel. If you have visible crowns or veneers we will tell you how the shades will end up before you start.
Is take home as good as in office whitening?
For most people, yes. A professional take home kit with custom trays gets to the same place over two weeks instead of one visit, and tends to be gentler on sensitive teeth.
Can I whiten while wearing aligners?
Talk to us first. Timing matters, and it is usually better to finish alignment before whitening so the final result is even.
Is it safe?
Peroxide whitening has been used in dentistry for decades. The risk comes from badly fitting trays leaving gel on the gums, which is exactly what custom trays prevent.
What if my teeth are already sensitive?
Say so at the exam. We start lower, go slower and add a desensitising agent. Most sensitive patients complete treatment comfortably.
