Dr. Ricken Patel

Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. Patel is a Rutgers trained cosmetic dentist with more than fifteen years in practice. He lost and broke his front teeth in a gym class accident in eighth grade, and having his own smile rebuilt is the reason he does this work. Whitening is usually the first thing he discusses with a patient, because it is the least invasive change you can make to a smile.

And the rest of the cosmetic work, only if you want it

Whitening is often enough on its own. When it is not, bonding, reshaping and veneers are handled in the same building by the same team. Nothing gets referred out, and nothing gets sold to you that you did not ask about.

Shop bought or professional?

Almost everyone tries a whitening toothpaste or a strip first. They are not useless, they are just weak. Here is the honest difference, so you can decide whether professional whitening is worth it for you.

Professional take home kit

Custom trays and a stronger gel, worn for a few minutes a day over two weeks.

Strips and whitening pastes

Generic fit, low concentration, sold to everyone the same way.

What treatment looks like, step by step

01

A check up first

A short exam confirms the teeth and gums are healthy. Whitening over decay or inflamed gums is a bad idea.

02

Impressions

We take a mould of your teeth so the trays fit exactly, including the back teeth most kits ignore.

03

Collect your kit

Trays and gel, with a walk through of how long to wear them and what to expect week by week.

04

Two weeks at home

A few minutes a day. Most people notice the change inside the first week.

05

Review and top up

We check the result and keep your trays on file, so topping up later costs gel rather than a whole new kit.

Questions patients ask before starting

Some people get short lived sensitivity, usually a twinge with something cold. We can lower the gel strength or add a desensitising agent, and it settles once you stop.

It depends where they start and what caused the staining. You will get a realistic expectation at the exam rather than a number from an advert.

Anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Keeping your trays makes topping up quick and cheap.

No. Whitening only works on natural enamel. If you have visible crowns or veneers we will tell you how the shades will end up before you start.

For most people, yes. A professional take home kit with custom trays gets to the same place over two weeks instead of one visit, and tends to be gentler on sensitive teeth.

Talk to us first. Timing matters, and it is usually better to finish alignment before whitening so the final result is even.

Peroxide whitening has been used in dentistry for decades. The risk comes from badly fitting trays leaving gel on the gums, which is exactly what custom trays prevent.

Say so at the exam. We start lower, go slower and add a desensitising agent. Most sensitive patients complete treatment comfortably.
